Kal-El, better known by his super hero name, Superman, is a Fighter from the DC Universe in MultiVersus.

Origin[]

Created by artist Joe Shuster and writer Jerry Siegel, Superman (real name: Kal-El) is one of the three most popular superheroes from the DC universe, alongside Batman and Wonder Woman. Initially a villain created for a short story known as The Reign of the Superman and possibly influenced by Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche's concept of the Übermensch, the character wouldn't have the status of a hero nor his powers until a short story, The Superman, released the same year. Although the duo had worked hard and received promising letters from Consolidated Book Publishing in regards to its publication, they eventually dropped out and the story was burned by Siegel, making it lost media. The Superman character would eventually be used in the story they sold to National Comic Publications, one of DC Comics' predecessors, who published the story in June 1938's Action Comics #1.

While Superman has had various reincarnations and reinterpretations across DC's history, his most well-known backstory revolves around Kal being sent to Earth as a baby in an escape pod by his parents after his home planet, Krypton, got destroyed by a natural cataclysm. His pod landed in the American countryside, near the town of Smallville, where he was found and adopted by farmers Jonathan and Martha Kent, who named him Clark Kent. Clark would later develop various superhuman abilities, such as incredible strength and impervious skin. His adoptive parents advised him to use his abilities for the benefit of humanity, and he decided to fight crime. To protect his personal life, he changes into a colorful costume and uses the alias "Superman" when fighting crime. Clark resides in the American city of Metropolis, where he works as a journalist for the Daily Planet.

According to the main lead writer for MultiVersus, Superman's portrayal in the game is an original interpretation that combines both his New and Prime Earth incarnations.[1]

Founding member of the Justice League, and one of Earth’s mightiest heroes.

Disaster struck Kal-El’s home world of Krypton when he was just a baby, leaving his parents with no choice but to send him to the stars. His rocket crash-landed on Earth where he was found by Martha and Jonathan Kent and raised as their child. As he grew older, the light of Earth’s yellow sun activated his incredible Kryptonian powers, which he vowed to use to protect humanity and stand up for truth and justice. As one of the founding members of the Justice League he has been an inspiration for countless generations of heroes as he continues to fight evil in all its forms.[2]

Superman's default look doesn't seem to have a specific basis, instead, being simply an amalgamation based on most classical depictions of the character.

ICE BREATH
Superman uses ice breath that pushes enemies and applies ICE. As ICE increases, enemies are slowed and eventually FROZEN. Enemies can STRUGGLE and other enemies can hit them to free them. Allies and allied PROJECTILES in ice breath get ICE GAUNTLETS, making their next hit deal ICE. Enemy PROJECTILES caught in ice breath are either destroyed or frozen into an ITEM.

CHARGE to aim a reticle. On release, Superman will dash to that location with a powerful ARMORED punch.
TEN-TON TACKLE
Superman will fly forward. CHARGE to increase distance of flight. If he collides with an enemy while flying he will GRAB them and fly a short distance before punching them forward.

METEOR LIFTOFF
CHARGE a launch into the air. Then, come hurtling back to the ground with a powerful impact attack. On startup, Superman will have ARMOR and fighters on the ground near Superman will be knocked upward.
GO LONG!
Superman lunges upward, GRABBING any enemy he comes in contact with. Superman can then throw them by holding a direction.

HEAT VISION
Superman traces his laser vision along the ground, triggering a delayed explosion that knocks enemies upward and applies IGNITED.
AERIAL HEAT VISION
Same as ground.

Superman can dodge upward and diagonally upward from the ground.

Developer’s Note: Superman’s frost breath was leading to really passive play. The frost breath does too much currently (freezes projectiles, freezes enemies, slows enemies, does damage, windboxes enemies away.) We wanted to remove the windbox element to allow opponents an approach option.

    • Recovery increased by 12 frames on whiff(miss).
    • Lowered base knockback of down throw.
    • This should help make the wall camping strategies less effective.

    • Fixed a bug where Superman could grab enemies from far away as they bounced off of walls.

    • Flight speed is reduced after Superman grabs an enemy so it won’t carry enemies as far.

    • Now has an ammo cooldown. Superman spawns with 2 ammo. One new ammo returns every 8 seconds.
    • This is to prevent heat vision camping, where Superman would only use this attack over and over.
  • - Ground Down Attack:
    • Hitbox active frames reduced.
  • - Ground Up Attack:
    • Hitboxes adjust so the attack no longer hits behind him.

Season 1.01 Patch

  • ~ Fixed a bug that would allow Superman to grapple enemies that wall bounce even if his hitboxes did not connect.

Trivia[]

  • Superman used to be classified as a Bruiser until May 16, 2022, when his archetype was changed to Tank on the official website.
    • This makes him the second Fighter to have had his archetype changed after Batman.
  • With his debut of Action Comics #1 being in 1938, Superman is currently the oldest character to appear in the game.
