MultiVersus is a free-to-play crossover platform fighting game developed by Player First Games and published by Warner Bros. Games, which mainly features content from franchises owned by Warner Bros. Discovery, although 3rd-party content has also been confirmed as a possibility by the developers. The game was officially announced on November 18th, 2021, following various online rumors and leaks, and was confirmed to be coming to the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Microsoft Windows (via the Microsoft Store and Steam) platforms. The game was also added to the Epic Games Store on July 26th, 2022. The full game relaunched on May 28, 2024.

Prior to the Open Beta release, a few playtests were held, featuring specific players who got invited via e-mails sent by Warner Bros. Games. First of these playtests were two Technical Tests played by people under a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA), the first one being held between December 10th and December 24th, 2021, and the second between February 25th and March 7th, 2022. A Closed Alpha Test was also held between May 19th and May 27th, 2022, this time with players being able to upload gameplay footage online. All of these playtests featured Exclusive Cosmetic Items that would carry on to later versions of the game for the players who managed to unlock them.

The Open Beta version was later released as an Early Access soft launch on July 19th, 2022. The Open Beta would later fully release on July 26th, 2022, the same day as the game's launch on the Epic Games Store.

The Open Beta period finished on June 25th, 2023, and the game shut down its online functions until its formal, full release on May 28th, 2024. During this period, MultiVersus was taken off stores starting April 4th, 2023, and players are currently only available to access the Beginner Tutorial, Advanced Tutorials, The Lab, and Local Play Game Modes. Players also have unlimited access to almost all released unlockable content until the hiatus ends. No refunds were made for players who have purchased the Founder's Packs or Gleamium, as said purchases would all return in the full launch. On May 15th, 2023, Warner Bros. Games had also sent surveys to select players via e-mails which asked what features and changes should be included in the game's full launch and subsequent patches. Minor invitational playtests under NDA will once again be held prior to the official release. The game was also secretly re-added to the PlayStation Store in September 2023 with an indeterminate date after its initial delisting.

On January 31st, 2025, Warner Bros announced that Season 5 will be the last season for the game, but the game will still be open to play until it's shut down on May 30, 2025.

Plot

While the story for the game has yet to be fully revealed, certain paragraphs from the Official Biographies for the Fighters found on the website reveal the enigmatic Nothing as being the main villain of the story. There are also mentions of a cataclysmic event known as The Great Dimensional Cataclysm, as well as of a mysterious crystal that granted Shaggy his superhuman abilities. Reindog's backstory also reveals that he was the Royal Guardian of the Zanifeer family before their world was destroyed by the Nothing, as well as the "6th wearer of the gem of power". Trophy's E.D.G.E.'s existence and why it is full of elements from other worlds, referred to as "Trophies" inside the game's files, has yet to be explained as well.

The game received generally positive reviews during its open beta. IGN wrote "MultiVersus may not be a must-play at social gatherings, but its refreshing team-based battles make it a great platform fighter online." Play summarized that it was "full of love for the characters, and crunchy to play, you owe it to yourself to give this a go – though the monetization methods are off-putting."

Its launch on Steam was the most successful for a WB Games title, and the biggest launch for a fighting game released on the platform.

The game topped the American sales charts for July 2022, falling to number 5 the following month. It was the most downloaded game on the US PlayStation Store for the same month, and number 2 in Europe. It also topped the sales charts in Australia. It was the most popular title on the Steam Deck platform.

By August 2022, the game had reached 10 million players. By September, it had reached 20 million. By February 2023, the game reportedly experienced a significant drop in daily players. Trackers for the Windows version reported roughly 1,300 players in the last 30 days, marking the title's lowest player count since launch. The announcement of the closure of the open beta surprised players who believed that the game was already fully released and had paid for premium content.
